Hinduism may be the richest tradition in the world for exploring this exact question, precisely because it refuses to settle on a single answer. At its heart, the tradition holds that reality itself is sacred, and that what we call "God" is not one being sitting apart from the universe but the very ground of existence. The ancient Sanskrit texts known as the Upanishads articulate this through the concept of Brahman, a word that resists easy translation but points toward the ultimate, infinite, self-existent reality that underlies everything. Brahman is not a God you pray to from a distance. Brahman is what is most fundamentally real, the depth beneath all appearances, the being within being. For many Hindu thinkers, to ask what God means is really to ask what reality ultimately is, and those two questions turn out to be the same question.
Yet Hinduism is equally at home with a deeply personal understanding of God. The Gita suggests that God is not only the ground of existence in some abstract sense but also the one who accompanies you, who meets you in your particular life with its particular struggles. This is why Hindu devotional practice, called bhakti, has such emotional warmth and immediacy. People sing to God, weep before God, argue with God. The relationship is real.
For anyone wrestling with what God means in their own life, Hinduism offers something genuinely generous: the permission to approach the divine from wherever you actually are. You might be drawn to silent meditation on pure awareness, or to singing devotional hymns, or to ritual worship at a temple, or to serving others as an expression of the divine in every face. The tradition calls these different paths, but it does not rank the person who prays to a personal God below the philosopher who meditates on formless Brahman. What matters is the sincerity of the seeking. And underneath all the extraordinary diversity of Hindu thought on this question runs one consistent thread: God is not far away, waiting to be found somewhere else.
