Why we made this

Most people meet the biggest questions of their life at the worst possible moment. Someone dies. A diagnosis lands. A marriage ends, or a child asks something at bedtime that you cannot answer. And when you go looking, you tend to find one of two things: a site that wants to sell you a single answer, or an argument between strangers.

We wanted somewhere quieter. A place where you could ask what happens after death, or why we suffer, and see how several of the world's great traditions have answered it, honestly and side by side, without anybody telling you which one to pick. Humans have been sitting with these questions for thousands of years. That work belongs to everyone, and it should be free to read.

The rest of the site grew out of the same instinct. If people come to us in grief, the least we can do is give them somewhere to put it: a memorial that stays online, a hand with the obituary, room for family to add what they remember.

How our answers are written

We think you should know exactly how the words on this site come to be, so here it is plainly.

The answers on our question pages are written by artificial intelligence. They are generated from the published teaching, scripture and scholarship of each tradition, and they are written to explain what a tradition holds, never to argue that it is right. Every new question passes a moderation check before anything is written, and every answer then waits for a person to read it and approve it before it appears on the site. Some are rejected and never published.

That process is careful, but it is not infallible, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. If you find something that misrepresents your tradition, we want to know and we will fix it. Corrections from people who practise a faith are the most valuable messages we receive.

What we write is a starting point for your own thinking, not religious instruction, and it is no substitute for a priest, imam, rabbi, teacher or elder who knows you and your circumstances. If you are struggling, please talk to someone. If a question suggests somebody may be in real distress, we show UK helpline details rather than an essay, because that is the right answer to that question.

How we make our money

God.co.uk is a business, not a charity, and we would rather tell you how it pays for itself than leave you wondering what the catch is. Reading the site is free and always will be.

Keeping a memorial online

A memorial is free to create and free for 90 days. After that, a one-time payment of £50 keeps it online forever, with no subscription and no repeat billing. We will never hold someone's memorial to ransom with a recurring charge.

Candles and keepsakes

A candle lit on a memorial costs £5, once, and stays lit. Printed keepsakes are in the works and will be priced when they are real.

The books we recommend link to Amazon, and we earn a small commission if you buy one. It costs you nothing extra, it never changes which book we choose, and it is disclosed on the page itself.

Advertising, eventually

We are not showing adverts yet. When we do, they will keep the free parts of the site free: our question pages, and memorials during their free period. Paying the one-time £50 for a memorial removes advertising from it for good, as well as keeping it online. We will keep adverts few and tasteful, and we will never let one interrupt a page someone is reading in real distress.

Who we are

God.co.uk is a small British operation, and small by choice. We are a trading name of Global Online Directory Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, number 03053178. The god.co.uk domain was first registered in 1996, which makes it older than most of the web.

Being small is why the site is calm, and it is also why a real person reads what gets published here. If you write to us, that is who answers.
