Ramesh came to Leicester from Kampala in 1972 with his wife Bhavna and two suitcases. He spent twenty-six years at the hosiery works on Belgrave Road and another fifteen behind the counter of the family shop, where he knew what most people wanted before they asked for it.

We warmly invite you to join us for the antyeshti. Ramesh would have wanted a full room and no fuss, and we will settle for one of the two.

Our family will be wearing white, and you are welcome to do the same, though nobody will mind if you cannot. You do not need to be Hindu to come, and standing quietly at the back is completely fine: much of the rite is done by the family rather than by everyone present.

He gave my mother credit for two years when my father was ill and never once mentioned it to anyone. We only found out afterwards. That was him.
